      Summary:
      Under the guidance and direction of the unit director, the Assistant Unit Director RN (AUD) is the clinical liaison and assistant business manager of a specific patient care unit(s). In the absence of the unit director, the Assistant Unit Director RN is the RN Unit Director designee. The Assistant Unit Director Registered Nurse implements initiatives in support of the unit vision and manages human, operational and organizational systems that support patient care.       Summary:

      Rush University Medical Center is seeking a highly collaborative Outpatient Cancer Palliative Physician to join our growing Cancer Palliative Care team. This is a fully clinical, outpatient position with an academic appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, depending on experience and qualifications. The role is focused on providing comprehensive palliative care services to cancer patients at Rush University Medical Center, Rush Copley, and Rush Lisle.  

      The selected candidate will work as part of an integrated cancer palliative team that currently includes physicians and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), with plans for expansion. Our goal is to enhance the quality of life for patients with cancer by addressing symptom management, goals of care, and complex decision-making in a highly coordinated setting.  

      Key Responsibilities

       • Provide outpatient palliative care services to cancer patients, focusing on symptom management, emotional support, and goals-of-care discussions. 

      • Work collaboratively with oncologists, APPs, nurses, social workers, and other interdisciplinary team members to ensure seamless, patient-centered care.

       • Conduct comprehensive patient evaluations, including history-taking, physical examinations, and formulation of individualized care plans. 

      • Coordinate care across Rush University Medical Center, Rush Copley, and Rush Lisle to ensure continuity and consistency in patient management.

       • Engage in family meetings and goals of care conversations to support patients and their loved ones through complex medical decisions.

       • Participate in quality improvement initiatives to further integrate palliative care into oncology services.

       • Maintain clinical documentation and contribute to team discussions in case conferences and patient rounds. 

      Qualifications 

      • MD or DO degree from an accredited institution. 

      • Board certification or eligibility in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. 

      • Eligibility for medical licensure in Illinois. 

      • Strong commitment to interdisciplinary teamwork and collaboration in an oncology setting. 

      • Excellent communication skills, particularly in complex and sensitive conversations with patients and families.

       • Experience in outpatient palliative care and/or oncology preferred

The candidate will have an opportunity to build a robust clinical practice encompassing all aspects of pediatric otolaryngology, to teach residents and medical students, and to develop a successful research program. The position offers the opportunity to expand this highly ranked program at the Rush main campus and regional sites that will help support the growth of the Section of Pediatric Otolaryngology. Candidates would take part in robust multidisciplinary clinical programs, including Pediatric Aerodigestive Program and Craniofacial Center, while also having the opportunity to grow clinical programs, including airway reconstruction and head and neck masses. The Section supports a busy, 72-bed Level IV NICU (highest IL designation), an 18-bed PICU with 24/7 coverage by pediatric intensivists, and a general pediatric unit at the main campus.

      The Otolaryngology department has 21 faculty, 8 APPs, and 11 audiologists that provide comprehensive array of otolaryngology services at the main campus and 6 regional sites. The department is planning to add 3 additional faculty over the next year and two additional regional sites to support clinical expansion. The program is currently ranked #19 on US News and World Report and has a highly competitive residency program with 3 residents/year and fellowships in Advanced Rhinology and Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

    Rush University Medical Center is seeking a highly collaborative Outpatient Cancer Palliative Physician to join our growing Cancer Palliative Care team. This is a fully clinical, outpatient position with an academic appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, depending on experience and qualifications. The role is focused on providing comprehensive palliative care services to cancer patients at Rush University Medical Center, Rush Copley, and Rush Lisle.  

    The selected candidate will work as part of an integrated cancer palliative team that currently includes physicians and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), with plans for expansion. Our goal is to enhance the quality of life for patients with cancer by addressing symptom management, goals of care, and complex decision-making in a highly coordinated setting.  

    Key Responsibilities

     • Provide outpatient palliative care services to cancer patients, focusing on symptom management, emotional support, and goals-of-care discussions. 

    • Work collaboratively with oncologists, APPs, nurses, social workers, and other interdisciplinary team members to ensure seamless, patient-centered care.

     • Conduct comprehensive patient evaluations, including history-taking, physical examinations, and formulation of individualized care plans. 

    • Coordinate care across Rush University Medical Center, Rush Copley, and Rush Lisle to ensure continuity and consistency in patient management.

     • Engage in family meetings and goals of care conversations to support patients and their loved ones through complex medical decisions.

     • Participate in quality improvement initiatives to further integrate palliative care into oncology services.

     • Maintain clinical documentation and contribute to team discussions in case conferences and patient rounds. 

    Qualifications 

    • MD or DO degree from an accredited institution. 

    • Board certification or eligibility in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. 

    • Eligibility for medical licensure in Illinois. 

    • Strong commitment to interdisciplinary teamwork and collaboration in an oncology setting. 

    • Excellent communication skills, particularly in complex and sensitive conversations with patients and families.

     • Experience in outpatient palliative care and/or oncology preferred

    The Otolaryngology department has 21 faculty, 8 APPs, and 11 audiologists that provide comprehensive array of otolaryngology services at the main campus and 6 regional sites. The department is planning to add 3 additional faculty over the next year and two additional regional sites to support clinical expansion.
