Summary:
The Clinical Dietitian 1 is responsible for providing medical nutrition therapy for patients at Rush. Active participation in the treatment process is essential as the Clinical Dietitian 1 interacts with patients and members of the healthcare team. This role will care for patient populations that are frequently unable to meet nutritional requirements orally, requiring enteral nutrition (EN) or parenteral nutrition (PN). This may include, but is not limited to, post-surgical, critically ill, neonatal, pediatric, and geriatric patients. • Provides enteral feedings and/or parenteral nutrition per protocol. Closely monitors patients for feeding and/or parenteral nutrition complications. Adjusts feedings and/or parenteral nutrition orders to ensure optimal intake.
•Communicates nutrition care plan to external health care facilities or other clinicians.
•Serves as a preceptor for educating dietetics students and other healthcare professionals on evidence-based medical nutrition therapy.

Responsibilities:
1. Completes nutrition screening for all newly admitted patients according to the department’s standards of care.
2. Monitors diet orders and enters diet orders in CBORD Diet Office System.
3. Creates and implements nutritional care plans for patients with minimal nutrition risk. Monitors nutritional parameters throughout the patients’ stay. Documents the nutritional follow-up and implementation care in medical record.
4. Discusses patient information and unit operations daily with the supervising dietitian.
5. Compiles and summaries patient information into the CBORD Diet Office System.
6. Initiates and calculates daily calorie counts of designated patients and records information in the medical record according to departmental policy.
7. Visits patients at meal rounds daily and records/communicates patient’s information according to department’s procedure.
8. Distributes, collates, and reviews patient satisfaction surveys and intervenes as needed to assure a high level of patient satisfaction.
9. Orders, cancels, and changes between-meal-nourishments for patients. Queries patient for tolerance of nourishments. Ensures adequate supply of par stock on units.
10. Assist patients with menu selection as needed.
11. Knows and operates the PCIS/CBORD computer pathways appropriately.
12. Provides patient with diet sheets and question patients or obtain a diet history about diet knowledge/intake. Provide effective nutrition counseling on basic diets under the supervision of the dietitian.
13. Communicates daily with unit leaders, CNC, and RN’s on units to coordinate patient care and resolve unit issues.
14. Works with and participates in the Quality Assessment and Improvement program.
